A Structured Setting Where Partners Can Discuss Their Concerns
Couples and marital counselling can begin with something as familiar as an argument that never feels finished. You try to explain your side, your partner reacts, and the conversation ends with both of you feeling unheard. Over time, it may seem easier to avoid the subject altogether.
We help you and your partner make room for these difficult conversations. Lumina Counselling Services welcomes couples who want to address conflict, trust concerns, emotional distance, or changes in their relationship. Both perspectives matter as we explore what is happening between you.
Processing Triggers
Money, chores, or time together may start the argument, but the concern underneath can be harder to name. One partner may feel that their efforts go unnoticed. The other may feel criticized despite trying to help. Each response can add to the tension.
Relationship counselling helps bring those concerns into the discussion. We ask questions, examine recent exchanges, and help you explain what you need from each other. The focus shifts from who said what to why the same disagreement keeps returning.
You may remember an event differently or disagree about how serious a concern has become. One person may want to talk immediately, while the other needs time to think. We help you discuss these differences without allowing the conversation to become another unresolved argument.
Couples counselling is available for newer and long-term relationships. Marital counselling addresses concerns within a marriage, including shared responsibilities, changing expectations, and unresolved hurt. You help decide which issues need attention and what you hope to work toward.

SERVICES
Interrupting, making assumptions, or becoming defensive can prevent either person from explaining their concern. We help you notice these habits and practise listening, asking questions, and expressing needs more clearly.
Partners can share a home and daily routines while feeling disconnected. Sessions allow you to discuss what has changed, what closeness means to each of you, and how stress or unresolved disagreements may be affecting your connection.
Secrecy, inconsistent actions, or broken promises can leave partners unsure of what to believe. We help you talk through the impact and clarify the boundaries, expectations, and follow-through rebuilding trust requires.
Work, finances, caregiving, and health concerns can leave both people with less patience. We explore how these pressures affect your conversations and responsibilities. Anger regulation may include recognizing warning signs, pausing heated exchanges, and returning to the concern more calmly.
Traditions, beliefs, and cultural backgrounds can shape ideas about roles, decisions, and relationships. We encourage each partner to explain what those expectations mean to them and discuss agreements that respect both perspectives.

Chemical and behavioural addictions, including concerns about alcohol or drug use, can affect trust, finances, and shared responsibilities. Partners may struggle to agree on what is happening or how to respond. These concerns remain an important part of our couples counselling work.
We help you discuss the effects on your relationship, express concerns, and clarify boundaries. For private support focused on addiction and personal coping skills, our individual counselling page provides further information.

A recent disagreement can give us a useful starting point. We may ask what happened before it began, what each person thought or felt, and how the exchange ended. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) helps us explore the links between those thoughts, feelings, and responses.
From there, you can practise a different approach during the session. This might involve explaining a need without criticism, checking what your partner meant, or listening before answering. Your feedback helps us decide which techniques are useful and where the work needs adjusting.
Appointments
Between appointments, you can try the skills in everyday situations. A difficult topic may need a clearer opening, an agreed time to talk, or a pause before emotions rise. The next session gives you time to discuss what worked and what remained difficult.
Your goals may include clearer communication, greater understanding, stronger boundaries, or renewed connection. Progress depends on your circumstances and participation. We review the changes with both partners and keep the work focused on the concerns you bring.
Our practice welcomes couples from St. Albert, AB, Edmonton, and surrounding communities. Evening and weekend appointments are available, with all sessions scheduled by appointment only.
